1988: Inauguration of the group's first property, Suite Hotel Eden Mar in Funchal, introducing an innovative concept of rooms and suites equipped with kitchenettes.

1994: Opening of the group's first 5-star hotel, The Cliff Bay, featuring private sea access and the now 2-Michelin starred restaurant, Il Gallo d'Oro.

2000: Inauguration of Porto Santa Maria, an urban resort located in the heart of Funchal's historic centre, facing the cruise port.

2003: Opening of Vila Porto Mare in Funchal, a resort composed of three separate properties—Eden Mar, Porto Mare, and The Residence—set in 13,000 m² of tropical gardens.

2022: Opening of La Villa at the Cliff Bay in Funchal.
International Expansion & Mainland Portugal

2007: PortoBay enters the Brazilian market with the acquisition of PortoBay Rio de Janeiro on Copacabana beach and PortoBay Búzios, a boutique hotel in a tropical setting.

2008: The group acquires its first property on mainland Portugal, the 4-star PortoBay Falésia in the Algarve.

2009: Expansion into São Paulo with the acquisition of L'Hotel PortoBay São Paulo, a 5-star boutique hotel located near Avenida Paulista.

2012: Acquisition of Estalagem Serra Golf on Madeira, renamed PortoBay Serra Golf; the main house is a classified regional heritage building dated 1920.
Urban Growth: Lisbon, Porto & Algarve

2015: Opening of the group’s first hotel in Lisbon, the 5-star PortoBay Liberdade.

2016: Opening of a second Lisbon property, the 4-star PortoBay Marquês.

2018: Entry into Porto with the PortoBay Hotel Teatro, a themed hotel built on the site of the former 1859 Teatro Baquet.

2019: Simultaneous opening of two 5-star properties: PortoBay Flores in Porto (housed in a 16th-century palace) and Les Suites at The Cliff Bay in Madeira.
